I vaguely planned a route:<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VZDk6II_WXg/TAi2I7kXGmI/AAAAAAAAADc/vYnJzIEZRRs/s320/Andy+Cycle+Map.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478829211241618018" />

Or, more precisely, here is the route on Google Maps. As I left at 6am, and given the roads I'd chosen to take, I encountered very few cars and lots of countryside and wildlife which, on a sunny morning like today, was an absolute pleasure. Having cycled through Lubenham, Marston Trussell, Sibbertoft and Sulby, my first brief stop was at Welford when I encountered Postman Pat & Jess:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VZDk6II_WXg/TAi3kCBXmlI/AAAAAAAAADk/EdStt6YgeHE/s320/IMG_1462.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478830776341994066" />

And more nearby wood carvings:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VZDk6II_WXg/TAi4Zlo49xI/AAAAAAAAADs/X_on2nEogK8/s320/IMG_1463.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478831696436066066" />

As I cycled up towards Cold Ashby, a tractor came up behind me. The tractor was as wide as the road, so I pulled over in a little lay-by for it to overtake (I managed to resist the urge to exact revenge for all those times I've been in a car and had to wait behind a slow tractor and make it wait until an appropriate overtaking spot). At that point I decided to have a quick water break and admire the view (and take a photo of it):

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VZDk6II_WXg/TAi-g7uChTI/AAAAAAAAAD0/3nDkVS6srA0/s320/IMG_1464.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478838419692094770" />

Once through Cold Ashby I headed out of Naseby towards the site of the Battle of Naseby monument. I stopped there for a snack, some photo's and to 'bone up' on a bit of local history!

The Battle of Naseby Monument:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VZDk6II_WXg/TAj6UnD3wdI/AAAAAAAAAD8/65Wdf11jMvo/s320/IMG_1465.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478904178685755858" />

The Parliamentarians would have been looking across the fields from this angle:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VZDk6II_WXg/TAj7g3oMd8I/AAAAAAAAAEE/4nw0R66JRrg/s320/IMG_1466.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478905488803133378" />

As I continued cycling home I came across the spot where the Royalists would have looked over the fields towards the Parliamentarians:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VZDk6II_WXg/TAj9OvtjQJI/AAAAAAAAAEM/zWQo_uaPsV0/s320/IMG_1477.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478907376463724690" />

That was my last stop before home. Has he not got enough money? I'm amazed all 70,000 haven't asked for a refund. Would they not themselves, as young scrotes before becoming multi-millionaires, take up the generous offer if they'd paid through the nose for a sub-standard gig? I think they would.

If their management had made this offer after the gig then fair enough. But to make this offer on-stage- clearly as an attempt to win back the affections of the disappointed fans- then to subsequently whinge when people take them up is ridiculous.

At the time he said "Let's 'ave it!" and now the fans are saying "Yes please!" Take it like a man- don't try and make them feel guilty for it.

The Dynamo Ascension: A Prog-Rock Project Lyric 2

<img style="float:right; I will be placing some lyrics from that era on this blog for two reasons:

1. Because I found them
2. Because they're great!

Here's the first:

The Dynamo Ascension

Magnets and coils power the dynamo
Ascending to places you’ll never know
In a world that’s not comprehending
This is the sound of the dynamo ascending

Ascending to the highest heights
High above the trees and kites
In a world that’s not comprehending
This is the sound of the dynamo ascending

Its power is something to be treasured
Greater than can ever be measured
In a world that’s not comprehending
This is the sound of the dynamo ascending

As electromagnetic fields collide
You must accept the dynamo pride
In a world that’s not comprehending
This is the sound of the dynamo ascending

With the world in the palm of its hand
All must bow down to The Dynamo Band
The Dynamo Ascension has been completed
The world as you know it has been defeated

The Dynamo Ascension has been completed
The world as you know it has been defeated

Number 5: Dire Straits- Walk Of Life

Often at discos or parties I can be heard saying 'I hate this song- it's one of my five least favourite songs'. People often feign interest and ask 'what else is in your top 5?' As I am not usually in the right frame of mind to put the required thought into the answer I feign thinking and wait for the next song. Thus this list is born.

I regrettably kick of my official 'Top 5: Worst Songs' (or should it simply be 'Worst 5: Songs'?) with a great band. I love Dire Straits…except this travesty. The sound of its horrendously cheerful ‘doo-doo de-de-doo-de-doo doo-doo’ organ backing track instantly gets my back up. Its general cheesiness really grinds my gears- it doesn’t fit in with the general ambience of Brothers In Arms (an otherwise great album).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 76px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VZDk6II_WXg/Sd0bLMCn9zI/AAAAAAAAABs/oZ6HzlNOc-w/s400/brothers+in+arms.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322440213646538546" />

Then there’s the video. I’m not a great fan of Dire Straits videos at the best of times (the video for ‘Romeo & Juliet’ is a particularly unimaginative and uninspiring and I suspect ‘Money For Nothing’ was how the record company described the video for the song of the same name when they saw it) but ‘Walk Of Life’ really takes the biscuit. The band in terrible 80’s clothes (with the possible exception of Mark Knopfler) intertwined with sports bloopers that remind me of Lisa Riley era ‘You’ve Been Framed’. For a start none of the clips are remotely amusing. The fact they are all American sports shows it is clearly aimed at an American audience. The Geordies should’ve looked closer to home - Gazza, Beardsley and Glenn ‘Leather Jacket’ Roeder were all playing for Newcastle United at the time for crying out loud.

Whenever I hear the song I just wish I was listening to ‘Sultans Of Swing’, ‘Money For Nothing’ or ‘Romeo & Juliet’.

Dire Straits - Walk Of Life
Uploaded by Dire-Straits
